Individual Note (shared)

Aggravated and unprovoked assault.

John Meecham was charged with feloniously wounding, at Stroud, a labourer named Gardiner, with intent to disfigure him.

The prosecutor, who had his face bandaged, stated - I was in the Crown and Anchor Inn, Stroud, on Monday evening, the prisoner went away about twenty minutes before I did, we had no quarrel; when I went out I saw the prisoner standing on the pavement, and without either of us speaking a word he knocked me down, and when I attempted to get up he kicked me in the mouth and three times in the ribs; I was carried into the Inn insensible.

The wife of the keeper of the Crown and Anchor stated that on hearing a noise she went out, and saw the prisoner kicking the prosecutor.

The Jury returned a verdict of Guilty, and after some strong remarks by his Lordship as to the brutal and unprovoked attack which had been made by the prisoner upon the unoffending prosecutor, he sentenced him to Transportation for 15 years.
